My Latest Series: What are glissandi?
My latest series of works all have the title Glissandi. I often get asked what this means and how to pronounce it. It is a musical term and like many musical terms, it is of Italian origin. The singular of the word is Glissando with more than one being called Glissandi or Glissandos.
So what is a Glissando? If you've ever sat down in front of a piano and simply run your fingers or fingernails up or down the keys so that they sounded very quickly in succession, you have played a glissando. Some styles of piano music incorporate Glissandi deliberately on occasion, for effect.

Harpists play glissandi very frequently, often two or more, one right after another and they can very easily move up and down the scale. In fact, they use glissandi so frequently that they just shorten the word to gliss.
Just below is a link to a short you tube video on harp glissandi. If you watch it, I think what I say below will make more sense.
So why would I name a painting Glissandi? As I was working with the pigments and colors, it seemed to me that I was moving up and down the various shades of whatever color I was working with in fast succession. It looked to me to be very much a visual series of glissandi. As often happens, it felt as if this series named itself.
Glissandi (in blue) is my latest in this series. It was on view at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center during the month of August as part of the 12th Annual Texas Artists' Coalition Juried Exhibition. It has been sold.
Glissandi (in purple) is up September 1 - 23 as part of Historic Fort Worth's Preservation is the Art of the City show. Four of my smaller works will be available there, as well. The reception will be on Saturday, September 9 coinciding with Fall Gallery Night. I'm really looking forward to it! I love the city of Fort Worth and it's many historic buildings and I feel privileged to be selected to participate in that show.
